BIOGRAPHY:
The artist Caroline W. Pitkin was a student of William Merritt Chase, as well as Charles Woodbury in later years. Born in New York City in 1858, Pitkin lived her entire life in Manhattan. She was a member of the National Association of Women Artists and exhibited both at the National Academy and the Pennsylvania Academy in the 1890's. It is believed this work is from the period of her life. She died in Manhattan in 1931.
