Description
Artist: Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) Title: "Koi no Jinsuke" Publisher: Kobunkan. Date: 1920, Taisho era. Medium: Woodblock Reprint Reproduction. Format: Vertical. Paper Type: Traditional Japanese Handmade Washi. Size: (10x6in) Place of Origin: Printed in Japan. Series: Biographies of Modern Men, this design depicts the violent clash between rival gambling bands in Shimosa Province in 1849. The figures—heroes, outlaws, and strongmen—are rendered with the dramatic intensity that would later define Yoshitoshi’s mature style. Much like the legendary Forty Seven Ronin, many of these men entered popular lore, becoming folk heroes long after their time. An important early work that foreshadows the narrative power of Yoshitoshi’s later masterpieces.”
