A carved wooden male and female set of twin sculptures with classic facial scars, carved coiffure and a well handled surface patina, note that the sculptures are both well well handled and smooth. Ibeji Twin sculptures are created by the Yoruba peoples of Nigeria , West Africa, who have one of the highest incidents of twin births in the world. As a result, twins are regarded as extraordinary beings protected by Sango, the deity of thunder. They are believed to be capable of bestowing immense wealth upon their families or misfortune to those who do not honor them. Yoruba peoples, Ibarapa ethnic group, town of Igbo Ora. The figures measures 10 to 9.75 inches tall each. Provenance: A Private Pennsylvania, USA, collection.
