BIOGRAPHY:
Jacques Schyrgens (1923-present) is a Belgian-Canadian painter and illustrator known for his watercolour street scenes. Born in Belgium to an artistic family (his father founded an art academy), he studied in Ostend, Paris, and Rome. He traveled extensively before emigrating to Quebec in 1952, where he began painting architectural and city views for hotels like the Chateau Frontenac. His career in Canada unfolded across several cities: producing hundreds of works in Quebec City, capturing Toronto's streets, and serving as Kenora, Ontario's first Artist-in-Residence in 1972. There, he helped found the local artists' association and expanded into printmaking and book illustration.Schyrgens's vibrant, dynamic depictions of urban life are held in institutional and private collections. His work has been exhibited internationally, from European capitals to museums across Canada, reflecting his lasting influence as a journeyman artist and mentor.
