BIOGRAPHY:
Joe Szarek is a colorist whose work is dedicated to achieving beautiful color combinations. His approach was shaped by six summers of study with master painter Henry Hensche at the Cape School of Art in Provincetown, grounding his work in a lineage that includes Claude Monet, William Merritt Chase, and Charles Webster Hawthorne. Szarek describes his process as a slow, lifelong refinement, driven by both the joy of painting and a disciplined analysis of color. His artistic journey began painting throughout New England in the 1970s and 1980s. A pivotal 1994 trip to Newfoundland to paint icebergs'inspired by Frederic Edwin Church'resulted in a feature in American Artist Magazine. After fifteen years of teaching Hensche's methods, he attended the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating with honors in 1996. His studies included a transformative year in Italy, where he immersed himself in Renaissance frescoes and produced a prolific series of 40 paintings in Assisi.Since then, Szarek has continued to push his exploration of light and perception, notably in his studio-based "Dark Air" series, seeking what he calls a "new frontier" of realism. Drawn by its expansive light, he and his wife, artist Patty, lived and painted in New Mexico for a decade before returning to Rhode Island in 2007.Today, Szarek teaches private color classes. His work is represented by the Cornell Museum in Florida and the Newport Art Museum in Rhode Island.
