
Description
Ecuador. Ca. 1000 - 500 B.C. A carved, dark gray stone mortar, probably basalt, depicting a stylized jaguar, having a squared body, standing on four stubby legs, a large openwork spiral carved tail and block form head. Mouth having large incised teeth and there is a recessed rectangular chamber on the back. Intact, excellent condition, with excellent surface quality and patina. A fine and unusually large example. Statement from James Judge (1980's): "I have personally shown this item to Mr. Robert Sonin, who examined it under high magnification and was convinced that it is an authentic antiquity. Furthermore, he was and is willing to write a letter stating just that, if we find a need for it."
