Ivory Coast. Fine Dan spirit mask carved with a high, smooth, rounded forehead and circular eye openings reinforced with metal sheet appliques. The projecting open mouth is animated by thin metal teeth set at an angle, with remnants of red fabric applied along the upper lip. A partial fiber beard remains attached to the chin. The mask's refined features and materials suggest it may be a gunye ge mask. Warm medium brown patina with deposits. Minor crack on eye rim. Custom base. Gunye ge masks are associated with Dan masquerades that embody spirit presences and play important roles in social regulation, entertainment, and ritual performance, appearing during public gatherings to convey authority, discipline, and communal values.
