TRIAL OF THE SUFFRAGETTE LEADERS The Trial of the Suffragette Leaders, 48pp., toning, portrait of Emmeline Pankhurst, publisher's printed wrappers (lacking staples), front cover with photographic illustration depicting 'Inspector Jarvis reading the Warrant', toned, covers restored, some creasing and small abrasions, small bookseller label pasted on upper cover, 8vo, The Woman's Press, [1909] Footnotes: RARE PRINTED ACCOUNT OF THE 1908 TRIAL. Scarce pamphlet containing a full account of the 1908 trial of Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst, and Flora Drummond, which took place on October 14-24. It includes statements from those involved (beginning with a long speech by Christabel Pankhurst), the evidence of the witnesses, Christabel's cross-examination of David Lloyd George, and the final summing up and sentencing by the Magistrate, Sir Henry Curtis Bennett (1846-1913). The women were found guilty of inciting a breach of the peace by circulating a handbill during a demonstration in Trafalgar Square on 11 October which urged their WSPU supporters to 'rush' the House of Commons on the 13th. Following the trial, Curtis Bennett was a marked man and survived several subsequent assassination attempts, including a parcel bomb and an attempt by suffragettes to push him off the cliffs at Margate.
