BIOGRAPHY:
Isabella Vaill Waldo was born October 28, 1842 in Bates County, Missouri, the third of five children of William and Elizabeth (Vaill) Waldo. As a young girl, she moved with her family to Minnesota where she developed a love of nature and art, which was encouraged by her mother. She grew up in the Midwest and studied abroad for five years, but for the majority of her adult life she lived and worked in New York City. She is best known as a portrait painter and for her depiction of Mexican life in the 1880's.
