Description
Salvador Dali (1904-1989) Untitled (Surrealist Portrait Study), Drypoint etching on wove paper, Circa 1967–1968. It is a limited edition, it being 7 of 50. It is hand signed Dali in pencil beneath the image. There is a blind stamp in the lower right that reads Dali. This refined miniature drypoint by Salvador Dalí exemplifies the artist’s spontaneous graphic experimentation of the late 1960s. Executed with delicate etched lines, the composition presents a fragmented surrealist portrait rendered in Dalí’s distinctive gestural style. The loosely articulated figure, tilted head, and swirling circular motifs evoke the dreamlike distortions and psychological imagery central to the Surrealist movement. The deliberately small plate, printed within expansive margins, reflects Dalí’s interest in presenting the image as an intimate surrealist study, recalling the immediacy of a spontaneous drawing translated into intaglio printmaking. These experimental portrait drypoints belong to a small group of works catalogued by Albert Field in his authoritative reference on Dalí’s graphic oeuvre. During the 1960s–early 1970s, Dalí produced numerous experimental etchings and drypoints that explored spontaneous figural and portrait studies outside his major illustrated portfolios. These works function almost as etchings derived from sketchbook drawings, revealing Dalí’s instinctive line and Surrealist imagination in its most direct form. The present work belongs to the small experimental drypoint series recorded in the Albert Field catalogue (Field 68-3), an important reference for collectors of Dalí’s graphic work. The plate size is 3 ½ inches x 4 5/8 inches. The sheet size is 11 inches x 15 inches. It is double matted and framed in an ornate gold and yellow frame and with frame it measures 23.5 inches x 23.5 inches. Acquired from a Metro Washington DC estate and it comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
