This is an original museum exhibition poster designed by Marc Chagall (1887-1985) for his landmark 1960 exhibition at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Reims. The exhibition focused on Chagall’s stained-glass windows for the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne de Metz, alongside related sculptures, ceramics, and prints. The composition features Chagall’s expressive black calligraphic forms floating within a luminous blue field, accented with touches of yellow—imagery closely associated with his spiritual and stained-glass work of the period. Rather than literal figuration, the poster conveys the poetic, symbolic language that defines Chagall’s approach to sacred art. It was printed by the renowned Mourlot studio in Paris, Chagall’s principal lithographic printer, this poster is a period, authorized lithograph produced contemporaneously with the exhibition.
