Image 12 3/4 Robert Mapplethorpe (1956-1989) was one of themost important influential, and controversial, photographers of the 20th century. His photographic subjects included members of the S&M community, socialites, musicians, flowers, male and female nudes, friends and several selfportraits. During his life he focused on promoting research for Aids and HIV and established a foundation for the cure of the disease. He died from AIDS at the young age of 43.
