Binding rubbed, spine cracked, nearly separated in half. Two early ownership signatures on title (one crossed out); owner signature dated 1805 on page 47; 20th century bookplate; text light browning. *** [Richard Johnson]. Binding scuffed, extremities of spine chipped, hinges starting. Page edges a bit browned. *** Andrew Stuart. Letters to the Right Honourable Lord Mansfield from Andrew Stuart, Esqr. London, 1773. Engraved title page with a small vignette. 40, 64, 48, 48 pp. Period calf, red morocco spine label. Andrew Stuart (d. 1801) was an eloquent lawyer who represented the Duke of Hamilton in the famous lawsuit disputing the legitimacy and succession of Archibald James Douglas, first baron Douglas. Douglas prevailed, and in these letters Stuart assails Lord Mansfield, the judge in the case, for his "want of impartiality." Front cover rubbed and slightly warped, joints & head of spine expertly repaired, front hinge reinforced. Some rare spotting inside but overall quite clean.
