Monterey furniture is a California Depression-era furniture line designed by George Mason and produced by Mason Manufacturing from 1929-1942. The unique look was a 'blend of old ideas that created a unique and fascinating style' (Ed. Roger Renick & Michael Trotter. Monterey: Furnishings of California's Spanish Revival. Atglen: Schiffer Publishing Ltd., 2000, page 17). The Spanish Revival movement and the renewed interest in Mexican, Indigenous, and Moorish traditions, coupled with the Hollywood fascination with the Old West, inspired the designs. Stars of the time such as Will Rogers, Gene Autry, Walt Disney, and Clarke Gable, decorated their homes with Monterey pieces, which were quickly becoming the go-to looks of the stylish and fashionable. Quintessentially Californian, inextricably linked with Hollywood, it is no wonder that Diane Keaton was drawn to historic Monterey furniture, and furnished her many Spanish Colonial Revival homes with choice pieces. From an early childhood trip to the Biltmore Hotel in Santa Barbara, she was struck by the 'world of opposites' evoked by the architecture: 'Shadow and light. Inside and out...a perfect world...that's when I came to understand the ache of romance lived within the walls of our Spanish heritage' (Keaton, Diane and D.J. Waldie. California Romantica. New York: Rizzoli, 2019, page 8). The Mason Manufacturing Company marked the Monterey furniture pieces with a branded horseshoe or the word MONTEREY. The furniture was produced with distinctive stains and paints that were complicated and difficult to complete, many with hand painted floral designs, bestowing the piece with an elegant whimsy. It is this juxtaposition that so delighted Diane; it 'unveils an evocative past while offering at the same time the promise of a hope-filled future' (California Romantica, page 9). The production of Monterey furniture stopped during World War II, making quality pieces a slice of rare California design history.
