Pile rugs depicting dragon figures were woven in the Caucasian khanates from as early as the 16th century and have survived in considerable numbers. They obviously provided the models for dragon sumakhs. Drawn in the geometric style characteristic of sumakhs, the design of this impressive example has been arranged freely and spaciously in the red field, with a row of palmettes used as the vertical central axis of the mirror-image composition. Animals and plants showing different degrees of abstraction have been added. The collector, a musician of world renown, purchased the dragon sumakh at Nagel auctioneers, Stuttgart, in 1999.
