Description
This is a mid-19th-century salt-glazed stoneware jug manufactured by Anton Melcher in Louisville, Kentucky. The jug features a classic ovoid beehive form with a tapered neck, a narrow mouth, and a single applied strap handle. The shoulder of the vessel is impressed with a circular three-line maker's mark that reads A. MELCHER / LOUISVILLE, KY. / MANUFACTURER. Below the manufacturer name is an impressed numeral 3, indicating a three-gallon capacity. The exterior is finished in a traditional salt glaze with a textured orange-peel surface and features iron spotting throughout. A prominent dark kiln drip is visible on the upper shoulder near the stamp. Capacity: 3 Gallons.
