Details:
Original sepia-toned press photograph depicting Charles and Anne Lindbergh issued in connection with the kidnapping of their infant son, Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr., on March 2, 1932. The image captures the famed aviator and his wife during one of the most heavily publicized tragedies of the 20th century. The reverse retains its original printed press caption discussing the disappearance of the Lindbergh child, along with scattered editorial docketing notations and period press stamps.
The verso caption reads in part: “Twenty-months-old Charles Augustus Lindbergh, son of the famous airman, and known to Americans as ‘the nation’s most famous baby,’ has been kidnapped…” and further details the discovery of the empty nursery and ransom demand.
The photograph exhibits uneven staining, handling wear, scattered surface creasing and indentations, and light edge wear consistent with newsroom use and age.
The photograph has been fully authenticated and professionally encapsulated by PSA/DNA as a Type I press photograph, encapsulated to an overall size of approximately 9.75 x 13”. Good condition overall.
Charles Lindbergh (1902–1974) became an international hero following his historic solo nonstop transatlantic flight aboard the Spirit of St. Louis in 1927. Anne Morrow Lindbergh (1906–2001), an accomplished aviator and author in her own right, partnered with her husband on numerous pioneering aviation expeditions during the late 1920s and 1930s, helping chart international air routes across the globe. The kidnapping and murder of their young son in 1932 became one of the most infamous criminal cases in American history, generating worldwide media attention and ultimately leading to the trial and execution of Bruno Richard Hauptmann.
