Pavel Ivanovich Belyayev (1925–1970) was a Soviet Air Force pilot and cosmonaut who commanded the historic Voskhod 2 mission in March 1965. During this flight, Belyayev oversaw the first human spacewalk, performed by his crewmate Alexey Leonov, marking a major milestone in human space exploration. Belyayev was responsible for manually piloting the spacecraft during a challenging reentry after an automatic system failure, demonstrating exceptional skill under pressure. For his contributions to the Soviet space program, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. Belyayev’s career was cut short by health complications stemming from his service, and he remains a key figure in early spaceflight history.
