Description: Authentic Pair of Mary Frances Woods Portrait Dolls Circa 1900-1920
These 2 dolls measure 10" tall and feature original trade blankets, glass seed bead necklaces, hand-sculpted crepe-paper-over-plaster faces, and stick-pin eyes.
Individually sculpted, and hand-painted using oils gives each doll a unique "portrait" personality. They feature tiny black bead eyes and wigs made from black mohair. No two are the same.
Mary Frances Woods dolls of this quality do not come to market very often.
Mary Frances Woods: These were artisanal, handmade "portrait" dolls. Woods personally lived with various tribes to ensure the authenticity of their dress and features, and each face was individually hand-painted. This labor-intensive process naturally limited the number ever produced.
Skookum (Mary McAboy): While McAboy started with handmade apple-head dolls, she quickly moved to mass production as demand grew. By the 1920s, Skookums were manufactured in large quantities by companies like the H.H. Tammen Co., making them much more frequently found today.
