Aldo Londi (1911–2003) was a seminal Italian ceramicist renowned for his transformative impact on mid-century modern design through his work with Bitossi Ceramiche. Born in Montelupo Fiorentino, a town with a rich pottery tradition, Londi began his ceramics career at the age of 11, apprenticing at the Fratelli Fanciullacci workshop. His early exposure to traditional techniques laid the foundation for his innovative approach to ceramics.
After serving in World War II and enduring five years as a prisoner of war in South Africa, Londi returned to Italy in 1946 and joined Bitossi as artistic director—a role he held for over five decades. Under his leadership, Bitossi evolved from a regional manufacturer into an internationally acclaimed design house. Londi's most iconic contribution is the "Rimini Blu" series, introduced in 1959, characterized by its vibrant blue glaze and intricate, hand-carved patterns. This line exemplifies his ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.
Beyond Rimini Blu, Londi's extensive portfolio includes a diverse array of vases, animal figurines, and decorative objects, each reflecting his commitment to experimentation with forms, glazes, and textures. His collaborations with designers like Ettore Sottsass further cemented Bitossi's reputation in the design world. Today, Londi's works are celebrated in museums and collections worldwide, symbolizing a harmonious fusion of artisanal heritage and innovative design.; Aldo Londi for Bitossi.
