Lucie Rie's works, particularly her hand-thrown vases and bowls, are notable for their modernist forms and her use of light colors. She studied ceramics at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule, a school of arts and crafts. In 1937, she won a silver medal at the Paris International Exhibition, and in the following year, Rie moved to London to escape the Nazis in Austria.; Lucie Rie (1902-1995), Austrian-born British ceramicist.
