Object: Double-edged kindjal dagger with silver-niello decoration

Origin: Caucasus region "” likely Georgia or Northern Persia (Tbilisi workshop style)

Description & Analysis
A distinguished example of a late-Imperial Caucasian kindjal, richly decorated in silver niello against darkened ground. The scabbard and hilt display floral and vine scroll motifs framed by geometric borders, all executed with the sharp precision characteristic of Tbilisi silversmiths of the 1880–1910 period.
The triple-fullered blade is hand-forged steel, retaining its original form and polish. The domed pommel cap and bulbous scabbard finial are of the classic "helmet" type seen in Georgian workshops. An original leather suspension strap remains intact "” a rare survival that testifies to the piece's careful preservation.
Comparable niello kindjals appear in the Hermitage Museum and in Western auctions under "Caucasian silver niello kindjal, late 19th century." Recent parallels were offered at Christie's and Bonhams in Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds sales, 2018 – 2023.
