Description & Analysis
A finely executed decorative kindjal, representative of the mid-20th-century Dagestani filigree revival tradition. The scabbard and hilt are covered in intricate silver wire filigree scrollwork, accented by gilded medallions and applied bosses framed with rope borders. The reverse side exhibits a subdued blackened background and polished silver surface.
The dagger terminates in a wire-wrapped teardrop finial, a signature feature of Kubachi-style workshops. The triple-fullered blade, forged and polished steel, reflects continuity of the traditional weapon form despite its ceremonial intent.
Such filigree daggers were typically produced by artisan cooperatives in Dagestan and Georgia during the 1950s–1970s for presentation or ceremonial use, maintaining exceptional craftsmanship within the Soviet decorative arts tradition. Comparable examples appear in Bonhams and Czerny's arms and armor auctions (2019–2023) under Dagestani silver filigree kindjals.
