BIOGRAPHY:
Sidney Richard Percy (born Sidney Richard Percy Williams, 1821-1886) was a prominent Victorian landscape painter and a leading member of the artistic Williams family, often associated with the Barnes School. He was the fifth son of painter Edward Williams, from whom he received his training. To distinguish himself within his prolific family, he adopted the name "Percy" from around age 20. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Society of British Artists.Early in his career, he painted the rural scenery around Barnes, but later sought inspiration in the dramatic landscapes of North Wales, Yorkshire, the Lake District, and Scotland. He was especially renowned for his atmospheric scenes of cattle grazing, characterized by meticulous geological detail, earthy tones, and soft, pastel accents. One of his works, A view of Llyn Dulyn, North Wales, was purchased by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria and remains in the Royal Collection.Percy enjoyed considerable popularity and financial success during his peak. He was also an early amateur photographer, sometimes using his photos as studies for figures in his paintings. In addition to his finished oils, he produced smaller, quickly executed watercolors'referred to by the family as "potboilers."He married Emily Charlotte Fairlam in 1857, and they had four children. His later years were spent in Sutton, Surrey, where he died in 1886 from complications following a leg amputation necessitated by a riding accident.Though his popularity waned late in life amid shifting artistic tastes, Sidney Richard Percy's work is now highly sought after, often achieving higher auction prices than that of his relatives, securing his legacy as a definitive painter of the Victorian landscape.
