BIOGRAPHY:
John was born June 26, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of acclaimed artist Lyle Dale Tayson Sr. and Irene Lucille Moore Tayson. He was raised in Chicago where John's aptitude for art was soon evident. By the age of 13, he finished his first portrait in oils. Encouraged by his father, he continued honing his artistic skills through his school years.
After graduation, John attended the Harry Lundeberg School of Seamanship and followed his father and grandfather, Patrick, by joining Merchant Marines. His three years at sea took him all over the globe to ports in South Africa, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates, Antigua, Japan and Korea, as well as the American ports in Alaska and Seattle. His nautical adventures provided him the opportunity to see and sketch the world and hone his unique style as an artist.
When he was 22 he rejoined his family to continue training with his father who had relocated to a cabin in Wyoming's Snowy Range mountains. During this time, he developed a deep appreciation for the American West and wildlife that became the subject of many of his paintings. This led to a long, successful Western art career that spanned over 30 years.
His work now hangs beautifully in countless art collections through-out the United States and internationally. In 2006, after spending five years sailing from British Columbia, through the Panama Canal and into the Caribbean, John and Lyle Jr. continued up to the U.S. East Coast. The Chesapeake Bay area was where John's artistic eye turned to marine art.
In 2010 the Maritime Gallery of America in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut began to represent John. He was invited to become a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists the following year. Starting in 2016, John took several long-term painting trips to Europe where he visited Greece, Croatia, Italy, France, Prague and the Netherlands.
John passed on July 25, 2020. John is missed very much by us all.
