PROVENANCE: Collections from the family collection of Wang Anfu (1913-2005) and Liu Huanzeng (1908-1989), descendants of the distinguished Republican-era Chinese statesman, diplomat, and cultural advocate Dr. Chengting T. Wang (Wang Zhengting, 1882-1961). A prominent figure in modern Chinese history, Dr. Wang served as a delegate to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China, and Chinese Ambassador to the United States. He was also a noted supporter of Chinese art preservation and played an important role in promoting awareness of the Dunhuang murals and other significant cultural treasures.

Wang Anfu and Liu Huanzeng were both educated at the prestigious Yenching University, later incorporated into Peking University. Their family maintained deep connections within China's intellectual and artistic circles. Liu Huanzeng's father, the renowned scholar Liu Shuping (1857-1917), was closely associated with influential cultural figures, including the celebrated Chinese painter Zhang Daqian.

Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Dr. Wang settled in Hong Kong, where he continued his diplomatic, educational, and philanthropic endeavors. Wang Anfu and Liu Huanzeng later joined him and remained devoted caretakers until his passing. The family subsequently emigrated to the United States, preserving an important legacy of scholarship, diplomacy, and cultural stewardship.
