CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY BLOCK-FRONT BONNET-TOP CHEST-ON-CHEST
Boston or North Shore, Massachusetts, Circa 1770
In two parts. Molded swan's-neck bonnet with flaming urn finials raised on plinths. Upper section with a fan-carved central drawer flanked by arched small drawers, all over four graduated full-width drawers. Case fronted by fluted pilasters. Block-front lower section with four graduated full-width drawers and a molded base. Claw & ball feet. Inscription on underside of drawer indicates the piece descended from David Pearce of Gloucester, Massachusetts to Polly Pearce-Beach circa 1781, to Eliza Beach Smith circa 1816, through to Anna Smith Folsom and Ellen Minot Folsom circa 1905.

Overall, good condition with the following issues: Refinished some time ago, very little if any surface wear. Two age splits on the front near the bonnet that have been re-glued. Replaced drawer runners on interior of upper case. Possible restoration to drawer dividers on upper case. Two of the small drawer fronts at the top with thin age splits. Minor age cracks to the front of the uppercase at left side. Thin age splits to all four side panels. Small repair to the front molding of the lower case at the waist, right side. Reglue to at least one finial. Feet appear good. Period hardware. The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report.
