CHIPPENDALE MAHOGANY REVERSE-SERPENTINE CHEST OF DRAWERS
Massachusetts, Circa 1780
Overhanging molded top on a conforming case. Four graduated full-width drawers with blocked sides, retaining possibly the original rococo brasses. Molded base with ruffled pendant drop and scrolled returns on front and sides. Claw & ball feet. Old handwritten label on backboard.

The chest retains a mellow old patina. The top with minor surface abrasions. Sides of the case have minor vertical shrinkage cracks. Lower strip of beaded edge has worn down on most of the drawer surrounds due to the bottom of the drawer runner with nails rubbing against this area. Small glue blocks were added at an early date to the underside of the bottom drawer next to the drawer runners. Original front vertical glue blocks have been removed and new blocks were added to accommodate casters (rear glue blocks also have holes to accommodate casters). The rear left vertical glue block is missing.
