A SAFAVID STYLE BRASS KASHKUL (BEGGAR'S BOWL) WITH DRAGON HANDLES.

Description

A Persian Safavid style kashkul or begging bowl, cast in brass with engraved and inlaid decoration. The vessel is of characteristic oval form, supported by a low, flared foot. It features two prominent handles cast in the form of stylised dragon heads with open, toothy maws, each surmounted by a small circular ring. The exterior surface is densely decorated in registers. Around the rim is a wide horizontal band containing a calligraphic inscription in thuluth script. The main body is adorned with a series of interlocking lobed medallions, each containing intricate foliate arabesques and islimi designs. The ground between the medallions is filled with fine, dense scrollwork. The base is finished with a band of repeating diagonal patterns. The inscription consists of a Shi'a salawat, invoking blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad and the Twelve Imams, specifically mentioning al-Mustafa, al-Murtada, al-Kadhim, al-Rida, and al-Mahdi.
