A QAJAR BRASS KASHKUL BEGGARS BOWL WITH OPENWORK DECORATION.

Description

This Persian kashkul, or beggars bowl, is fashioned from brass in a traditional boat-like form. The upper surface is largely occupied by an integral panel of pierced openwork, featuring a central eight-petalled flower head surrounded by birds and intricate foliate scrollwork. The body of the vessel is decorated in horizontal bands. The wide central register depicts various figurative scenes, including seated and standing figures in Qajar-style costume engaged in courtly pastimes and music, set against a background of scrolling vines. The base features two circular medallions containing equestrian figures, possibly hunters or warriors, surrounded by dense chasing. At either end are cast brass hinged loops intended for a carrying chain; one loop retains three small turquoise-coloured cabochon insets.
