BIOGRAPHY:
Mortimer Borne (1902-1987) was a Polish-born American printmaker, painter, sculptor, and educator. Born on December 21, 1902, in Rypin, Poland, he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1916. He studied at the National Academy of Design, the Art Students League of New York, the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and with Charles Webster Hawthorne, founder of the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown. Borne began his printmaking career in the mid-1920s, producing drypoint etchings of New York City. By 1930, his work was represented by Frederick Keppel & Co., one of New York's leading print dealers. He became known for his innovative color drypoint technique, which he developed and advanced throughout his career. In addition to drypoint, Borne worked extensively in oil painting and sculpture, including wood sculpture created from materials he collected or sourced from around the world. His subject matter included New York City street and subway scenes, landscapes and seascapes of the eastern United States, portraits, and still lifes. Borne taught at The New School for Social Research in New York City from 1945 to 1967. After relocating to Nyack, New York, he founded the Tappan Zee Art Center in his home. His work is included in the permanent collections of major institutions, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian Institution, The National Gallery of Art, and The Victoria and Albert Museum, among others. Borne also published articles on artistic techniques in Leonardo and The Rotarian magazines, discussing innovations such as color drypoint, chromatic wood sculpture, and the use of convex canvas to enhance three-dimensional illusion in painting. Mortimer Borne died in Nyack, New York, in 1987.
