BIOGRAPHY:
Samizu Matsuki (March 16, 1936 - August 4, 2018) was a Japanese-American artist known for her Classical Realist and "Magical Realist" paintings.
Born in Uryu, Hokkaido, Japan, to educators, she graduated from the Women's College of Fine Arts (now Joshibi University of Art and Design) in Tokyo in 1958. In 1961, she married an American airman and moved to the United States.
In 1970, she won the Gold Medal at the First New York International Art Show and became one of the first women admitted to the Salmagundi Club since its founding in 1871. She also won the Grand Prix at the 1971 Locust Valley Art Show and the Award of Excellence at "Long Island Art '74."
She called her style "Magical Realism," integrating classical Western painting methods with contemporary techniques including pointillism, Cubist multiple focal points, and dislocation of perspective. Her notable works include "Triumphant Return" (1970), "Ah..." (1974), and "A Celebrator."
Later in life, she lived in Maryland and Maine. She died of cancer at her home in Rockland, Maine, in 2018.
