Description
[MAPS]. [VERTUE, George (1684-1756), and BASIRE, James The Elder (1730-1802), engravers]. A Bound Group of 27 Maps and Prints of English Subjects, Primarily for the Society of Antiquaries of London. London: The Society of Antiquaries, [ca. 18th century]. Large folio. Some maps or prints folding. Approximately 21 x 14 1/2". Bound together in contemporary half brown calf over marbled boards. A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF RARE AND UNUSUAL MAPS AND PRINTS FROM THE EIGHTEENTH CENTURY.
Vertue and Basire were two of the most prominent engravers of their day, and collections of this nature are exceedingly rare (we know of only one other similar copy, which is in the Leeds Library). Each of these maps and prints are quite rare, some virtually impossible to obtain elsewhere. A detailed list is available upon request.
Bookplate of William Long, Esq. on fp. (this bookplate is known to be on another title - History of Great Britain from the Death of Henry VIII to the Ascension of James VI of Scotland to the Crown of England, 1806).
