Description
MS letter written & signed by General Bernadotte, future King Charles XIV John of Sweden (also Charles III John of Norway) to Vicompt de Barras, Director of France, dated 1798. Mounted and framed. Jean Baptiste Bernadotte (1764-1844) was a distinguished general in Napoleon's army. He served as Minister of War in 1798 and was appointed Marshal of France by Napoleon. In 1810 he was elected as heir presumptive to the Swedish throne. Despite being French born, he was deemed the closest heir to the dying lineage of the Swedish royal family. In 1818 he succeeded Charles XIII & II and was crowned King of Sweden and Norway and reigned until his death in 1844. The letter is addressed to Paul Barras, [Vicomt de Barras] (1759 - 1829) one of the Directeurs or political rulers of France during the Directoire period 1795 - 1799. The letter contains a character reference and recommendation for a military appointment. Lot shipped from Spain. This lot is guaranteed as described or your money back.
