Description
Comprised of an exceptionally well-detailed and embellished helmet, shield and armguard, finely decorated en suite with scenes from Persian history and inlaid with gold and silver, and a coat of mail with patterns worked in brass rings. The helmet of characteristic hemispherical form with elongated top spike, adjustable nasal bar and plume tubes, embellished with chiseled intertwining cartouches depicting Persian nobles and heroes at court detailed in gold overall, with broad borders containing Arabic inscriptions heightened with silver, and retaining its camail of butted rings with patterns in brass and pointed termini, with its original padded lining. The circular shield forged from unusually thick steel with applied brass rim, elaborately chiseled overall with finely-detailed nobles hunting a variety of beasts and birds with extensive gold inlay, encircled by cartouches containing Arabic calligraphy embellished with silver, and scalloped bosses with chiseled floral motifs. The bazuband raised from a single plate and deeply chiseled overall with scenes of heroes and nobles in battle, finely detailed in gold. The mail coat wrought of butted rings with geometrical designs worked in brass rings en suite with the camail and retaining its original padded silk collar and fine matching mail cowl terminating in six points. Third quarter of the 18th century. Light wear, losses to camail. Height of helmet including camail 52 cm. Mannequin not included.
