Lot 0008 Details

Description
JOHN COFFMAN, ROCKINGHAM CO., SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA DECORATED STONEWARE SQUAT POT / PRESERVE JAR WITH COVER, salt-glazed, compressed ovoid form with plain neck, plain rim and small, arched handles, with an appropriate but slightly ill-fitting cover. Incised and cobalt-filled "Peare" (sic) in script and framed by three brushed cobalt leaf-like ornaments on one side, the other side with a striking brushed and slip-trailed cobalt double-bloom tulip or blue-bell flower. John Coffman (1824-1899), Park Factory, Eastern Rockingham Co. Circa 1845-1856. 7" H rim, 5 1/2" D rim.

Published: Evans/Suter - A Great Deal of Stone & Earthen Ware, p. 38, fig. 20 and p. 100, pl. 51.

Provenance: Collection of the late John and Lil Palmer, Purcellville, VA.
Purchased from Frank Hatch, Richmond, VA, 1994.
Exhibited: "'A Great Deal of Stone & Earthen Ware,' The Rockingham County, Virginia School of Folk Pottery", Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society, September 7 - December 30, 2004, No. 20.

Catalogue Note: The attribution for this jar is based on the very distinctive rendition of the letter P in "Peare" which is identical to the letter P in "Park" incised on a signed John Coffman jug, see Evans/Suter, p. 100, fig. 197. Another squat pot inscribed "Plum" in the same script is illustrated in Evans/Suter, p. 38, fig. 21.
John commented in his notes that this was Lil's favorite squat pot in their collection.
Condition
Inscribed side with a short hairline off the rim, floral side with a 2" hairline off the rim and a network of freeze cracks from the base.
