Madonna & Child with Infant St. John Northern Renaissan

Lot 0036 Details

Description
Madonna & Child with Infant St. John Northern Renaissance Rogier van der Weyden Flemish or Circle of Dieric Bouts Dutch with Old Italian Francia 16C Attribution Oil Painting

16th century oil on panel depicting the Madonna and Child with the infant St. John thought to be of Northern Renaissance influence, Francia, Rogier van der Weyden (Flemish) or Circle of Dieric Bouts (Dutch) attributed to Italian painter Francia.
The painting is accompanied by a typed scholarly statement attributing the painting to the Italian Renaissance painter, Francia, original name Francesco di Marco di Giacomo Raibolini (1450 -1517/18).

We strongly feel strongly this is actually a Northern Renaissance artist in the circle of Rogier van der Weyden (Flemish) or Dieric Bouts (Dutch).
Also one might say the painting stylistically encompasses the characteristics of mannerism known by elongated proportions, highly stylized poses, and lack of clear perspective with an interchange between Northern Europe and the Italian High Renaissance in the color and composition.

  • Approximate Dimensions: Panel measures approximately 23 3/4 inches high by 18 3/4 inches wide within exhibition gilt and gessoed molding approximately 33 1/4 inches high by 28 1/2 inches wide by 4 inches deep with period label verso that is illegible, but appears to be in Italian, or possibly French.
