Rare early Swiss conterfeit of the Aldine edition, containing the Aldus’ preface and the dedicatory letter to Pope Leo X by Giocondo da Verona, both contained in 1514 Aldine edition.
At verso of last leaf there is the following advice calchographvs lectori: «Excusimus haec ad Aldinu(m) exemplar, & vigilantissima cura [...]».
The classic main collection of the ancient Roman writers on agricultural subjects. Cato deals with the development of vine, olive, and fruit growing; Varro treats with general agriculture, cattle and sheep raising, and smaller farm livestock; Columella also treats with general agriculture from farm buildings, soils, crops, domestic animals, poultry, fish and bees. Palladius was a knowledgeable agriculturists with estates in Italy and Sardinia: his work is a practical manual with the instructions separated into months of the year.
The collection contains descriptions of making mulled wine, Greek wine, straw wine, olive oil, the recipe of “Carthaginian soup” (made of oatmeal, cheese and honey), porridge, sweet-wine cake, pork tenderloin and mead or honey wine.
