ENGLISH DEVONSHIRE POTTERY REDWARE HOLLOW MOLDED FIGURE OF A LION, recumbent on an incorporated mound, the body painted with white and brown marbleized slip, glazed interior. Attributed to Bovey Tracey, Devonshire. Circa 1780-1800. 2" H, 2 5/8" W.

Provenance: From the personal collection of George and Mickey Deike.
Catalogue Note: The molding is identical to the more typical creamware example also in this auction. The old label affixed to the interior mentions a history of ownership through a good part of the 19th century by families named Griffiths and Owen, both common surnames in Wales, just across the Bristol Channel from Devonshire port towns north of Bovey Tracey.

Condition

Excellent condition, with shallow lateral chip to underside of base on reverse.
