I: Speede and Are to bee Sold by Roger Rea the Elder and younger at the Golden Crosse in Cornhill against the Exchange Subject: Italy Published: London: Roger Rea Date: 1665 Description: Carte-…-figures with Mannerist-style cartouches dated 1626, printed for the rare Roger Rea edition of Speed's famous atlas A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World. Rea later sold the plates to Bassett and Chiswell, publishers of the 1676 edition. From left to right, the illustrations in the top panel show: ''THE ARMES OF THE POPE [medallion],'' ''VERONA,'' ''NAPLE,'' ''VENICE,'' ''ROME,'' ''GENVA,'' ''FLORENCE,'' and ''THE ARMES OF THE COMMON WEALTH OF VENICE [medallion].'' From top to bottom, those in the left panel show: ''THE POPE,'' ''THE NEAPOLITANS,'' ''THE ARMES OF SARDINIA [medallion],'' ''THE VENETIANS,'' and ''THE FLORENTIANS.'' From top to bottom, those in the right panel show: ''THE DVKE OF VENICE,'' ''THE ROMAINES,'' ''THE ARMES OF CORSICE [medallion],'' ''THE MILANIANS,'' and ''THE COV[N]TREI-ME[N] OF GENVA.'' On verso, text in English provides a two-page ''Description of Italy.'' Size: Approx. 15.5'' x 20.3'' (39.4 x 51.6 cm) Color: Hand-colored engraving. Condition: Map is toned, with both left and right margins, as well as a 1.3'' (3.3 cm) split to the center fold at bottom, all expertly reinforced, but with an unreinforced 1.8'' (4.6 cm) tear just to the left of the center fold at bottom; in margin, soiling and occasional chipping, with diagonal pencil marks at top left and right corners; on verso, three adhesive mounts remain attached at top left and right.
