Alvar Aalto. Tile from the Alvar Aalto museum in Jyvaskyla, c.1950. L. 34.5 cm. Made by Arabia (Wartsila Oy), Helsinki. Porcelain, white, glazed. Marked: AAM 347/500.

Condition

The rod-shaped ceramic tiles were used in several buildings designed by Alvar Aalto from the 1950s onwards. The size, shape and colour range varied considerably. The _porcelain tiles were used for cladding both interiors and exteriors. In 1973, the museum designed by Alvar Aalto in Jyvaskylaa was completed and named after him. The facades of the building were clad with light-coloured, rod shaped ceramic tiles and plain white tiles. In 2002-2003 the rod shaped tiles on the facades of the museum were replaced with new ones. Some 500 of the tiles that were removed have been numbered separately (leaflet).
