Lot 0084
Civil War Letters. This Lot consist of 16 letters from two brothers from Cross Keys South Carolina Dates 1861-1863. Members of Hamtons Legion, writting home to their parents. They were involved in a scirmish and were ran out by the Yankee soilders, but the one brother stays behind to care for his other brother who has fallen ill with Terberculosis . A farmer puts them up and gives them as good a care or better than they received back home. Some months later they meet up with him again on a train and learn that the day after they left the Yankees raided the place taking the man prisoner but he managed to escape. The sick brother dies. Other letters speak of the number of yankees they are seeing taken off as prisoners. How the folk in VA are so bad off they they are sifting the dirt off the smoke house floor for salt. ---Side note: Hampton clothed and equipped his force, called "Hampton's Legion," entirely out of his own pocket. He enlisted some of the best-born young men in the state to fill its roster, and its officers were recruited from the state elite. One of its officers wrote his mother, "It is by all odds the finest looking and best drilled body of men that has left the State." President Davis himself complimented the force on its personnel and appearance. - NOTE! Please read the following before bidding.
