Lot 5502
Title: Ancient Tahiti
Author: Teuira Henry
Publisher: Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii
Printing Year: 1928

Condition/Details: Bound in modern tan cloth boards with gilt embossing, this antique text is a scarce early anthropological investigation of the celebrated Tahitian Islands. The exhaustive work is "based on material recorded by J. M. Orsmond" (1784[?] – 1856) who wrote the following in the preface: "Tahiti is far famed yet too little known. …. The history of Tahiti should be based only on the traditional statements of its people. …. Feeling the great importance of crystallizing Tahitian literature in all its original simplicity and style of rendering, wherein lies its greatest charm, I have carefully collected the records as they fell from the lips of priests and bards and other learned natives of both sexes, in doing which, with pencil and paper in hand, I have been struck with the beauty of the language and the richness of many of the words and figures of speech." Orsmond passed away before completing the work and it was his granddaughter, Teuira who ultimately assembled the book. Teuira Henry labored for many years "in Tahiti in charge of the mission schools and later in Hawaii as teacher at the Royal School of Honlulu." The volume shows light external age/wear, and is solidly bound with lightly toned pages and library markings. The book measures approximately 6.75" x 10" and contains 651 pages. Shipping cost (within the U.S.) for this lot will be: $6.50
