Description
Political“The Rich Man Should Be Taxed Equally With The Poor Man” William Jennings Bryan 1896 Campaign Poster

(1896), Presidential Campaign, Large Poster Portrait of William Jennings Bryan, with Free Silver and Just Income Tax Slogans, Very Fine.
Large 21.75” x 21.5” black print on white paper campaign poster for the 1896 Presidential Election, has a 1’ x 1’ portrait of William Jennings Bryan in the center, with his name below and “Democratic Candidate for President of the United States.” Above the portrait are the slogans: “Bryan & Sewall - Free Silver and a Just Income Tax! - The Rich Man Should be Taxed Equally with the Poor Man.” The portrait is signed “H. G. Frobit.” This poster is a bit ragged on the right edge and has been trimmed on the left and bottom edges. There is a 3” tear in the upper right corner, otherwise this poster is in good shape.

Arthur Sewall (1835-1900) was a U.S. Democratic politician from Maine most notable as William Jennings Bryan's first running mate in 1896. Sewall never held elective office, although he was a member of the Democratic National Committee from 1888 to 1896. Arthur Sewall's main claim to fame had been as a wealthy shipbuilder and New England industrialist. He was a director in the Maine Central railroad and President of the Bath National Bank for years. His selection is believed to have been an effort to win votes among conservative and New England members of the party who were disturbed by the populist aspects of William Jennings Bryan.
