Model 1840 saber, heavy cavalry saber, manufactured before the Civil War. Features straight wooden handle covered with leather and a wire grip, brass hilt has three branches, brass pommel cap and guard are unadorned with "JWR" and "ADK" on the top of the pommel cap. Steel blade has flat back with narrow and wide fuller stopped at the ricasso, iron scabbard with iron mountings and marked on the end "ADK". Only 2,530 of these 1850 dated Ames cavalry sabers were made. Manufactured by Ames Manufacturing Company, Cabotville, Massachusetts. Marks on ricasso, "AMES MFG CO / CABOTVILLE / 1850" and "US / ADK". Blade length 36in. Condition: The brass is good, the grip has leather wrap and wire intact with a slight separation about 3/4's of the length of the grip and a few very minor spots of missing leather, the washer is intact, the blade is clean but used with some common scratches, the edge of the blade appears to have no dents, the scabbard is intact with light rust but in good condition. Overall condition is good.
