A-046 U.S. WWII Purple Heart award to Cpl. Joseph E. Oleskiewicz, a member of "The Filthy Thirteen" - the 1st Demolition Section of the Regimental Headquarters Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division. On 6 June 1944 this Unit was dropped into Normandy and ordered to secure or destroy bridges over the Douve river. Half of these men were either killed, wounded or captured during this mission. Oleskiewicz appeared in a Stars and Stripes photo taken on the evening of 5 June 1944. While he survived the Normandy Invasion, he later was killed in action during Operation Market Garden on 30 September 1944. The Purple Heart is named "JOSEPH OLESKIEWICZ JR" and is numbered "456967". In excellent condition with ribbon bar, lapel device and original case. Also with (1) "BRITAIN'S HOMAGE TO 28,000 AMERICAN DEAD". Ttile on cover is in gilt lettering as well as "IN MEMORY OF J. Oleskiewicz". Published in 1952 and presented to the family. (2) "Sons in Service" flag with 23 stars. Some wear and tears to the red field. 34 1/2" x 55". (3) American burial flag. With the triangular framed glass case. (4) Airborne Command and 101st Airborne Division shoulder patches - not Oleskiewicz's, but were included by a family member. Rare. II
