Budet i na nashei ulitse prazdnik! [There Will Come Our Turn to Celebrate!], a poster by Vladimir Kaidalov (1907-1985, People’s Artist of the Uzbek SSR), No. 80 in the Okno plakata “Udar po vragy” [Poster Window: “A Strike Against the Enemy”] series. Published by Dalgiz, Khabarovsk, . 92 x 58.5 cm.
We have no detailed information about the Okno plakata operation of the Khabarovsk regional publisher, Dalgiz, but an internet query produced the names of several other posters from this series. Printing runs of the Dalgiz Okno Plakata appear rather large for a local window display operation (up to 3000) so it is possible that its posters were intended for distribution beyond the Far East region. The poster is dated 1942 in plate, but may have been published later in the war (1944).
One cannot help but notice the “Central Asian” motifs in the design, somewhat unexpected in a poster produced in Khabarovsk. Kaidalov, indeed, is often described in Soviet references as one of the leading artists of Uzbekistan (note also the honorary title). The artist studied art in Leningrad, but in the early 1930s moved to Tashkent, and mostly worked there afterwards. We offer in this sale yet another Kaidalov poster produced by Dalgiz in 1945, and have found several references to Kaidalov’s other Dalgiz posters of the war period. His presence in the Far East at the time was likely tied to military service.
