Bei nemetskikh zverei! [Beat the German Beasts!], a poster by Viktor Klimashin (1912-1960). Published by Iskusstvo, Moscow-Leningrad, 1943. 42 x 28 cm.
This highly popular poster underwent several printings during the war, and exists in several sizes. The poster’s secondary caption, “The Hitlerite Army Can and Will Be Destroyed” is a paraphrase of Stalin’s pronouncement in his major November 1942 speech, made at a time when the outcome of the Battle for Stalingrad still remained unclear.
Graphic artist Victor Klimashin worked as a posterist, book illustrator, and magazine artist. Called to active duty at the beginning of the war, he was eventually reassigned from the front lines to the Military Artists Studio headed by a fellow graduate of the Saratov Art School, Nikolai Zhukov. After the war, Klimashin became the chief artist of the popular Soviet magazine Ogonyok.
