Eastern Mediterranean, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. Solid, 22+ karat gold in the form of an exquisite openwork cross with a large cabochon garnet in center and an ample suspension loop at top. A whopping 24.78 grams in gold weight. This accompanied by a matched pair of hair pendants with hinged loop in crescent shape. The pendants were actually worn in the hair with a bit of added perfume. Look closely and you'll see a Byzantine cross centrally depicted amidst the elaborate openwork. Combined weight of hair pendants 36.46 grams, total weight of both cross and pendants 61.24 grams.
