EDMUND HENRY OSTHAUS (AMERICAN 1858-1928), OIL ON CANVAS, 28" X 36", THREE IRISH SETTERS:Three Irish setters. Signed lower left, gilt framed. Includes a framed November 11, 1911 signed letter from the artist to the owner of the painting, Mr. Booker from Toledo, Ohio. According to the Osthaus letter, the painting was inspired by the action and pose of his dog, Mack, on a ruffed grouse hunting trip near Tawas, MI. (rev.20070608)
Condition
Superb quality and detail - a very fine example of the work of Osthaus. As viewed under blacklight in the unopened frame: aside from the usual, expected underpainting showing through, the painting blacklights clean; some stretcher bar cracking developing along the left and top left edges; not lined or patched; gilt period frame has some cracking (expected) and almost no chips; original stretchers.
